Crafting Futures
A Visit to Rycotewood’s Summer Showcase

This afternoon, I had the great pleasure of visiting Rycotewood Furniture Centre—part of City of Oxford College and the wider Activate Learning network—for a private viewing of their Summer Show: a stunning celebration of craftsmanship, creativity, and commitment to excellence. I was shown around by Josh Hudson, the college’s inspirational furniture lead, whose passion for the work and pride in his students was immediately evident. And what work it is—bold, intricate, refined, and deeply impressive at every level. From Level 1 learners just starting their journey through to degree students preparing to launch their professional careers, the breadth and quality of furniture on display was nothing short of extraordinary.
I have a particular affinity with Rycotewood. It was students from the college who designed and made my High Sheriff’s shield, now proudly hanging in the Combined Courts. Every time I see it, I’m reminded of the power of vocational education—not just to teach skills, but to build identity, confidence, and a sense of meaningful contribution to society. Today’s exhibition only deepened that appreciation.
Too often, we undervalue the vital role that further education colleges play in shaping our future. Rycotewood is a shining example of what happens when young people are given the time, support, and resources to grow their talents. They create pieces that are not only functional but beautiful. They learn the value of precision, patience, and perseverance. They begin to see themselves not just as students, but as designers, makers, and professionals. The atmosphere today was one of quiet pride—a community of learners and educators coming together to celebrate genuine achievement.
I even had the chance to relax briefly in one of the students’ superbly designed and immaculately made chairs—a small but telling moment that reminded me how thoughtful design can elevate the everyday into something truly special.
My thanks to Josh Hudson and the entire team at Rycotewood for welcoming me so warmly, and for allowing me to experience such inspirational work. What I saw today was not just the result of technical skill, but of thoughtful mentorship and a real belief in what young people can do. Long may it continue.
