Celebrating Oxfordshire’s Reading Champions
The summer gathering of ARCh (Assisted Reading for Children in Oxfordshire) volunteers

This afternoon, with rain threatening outside but spirits high within, I had the immense pleasure of joining the summer gathering of ARCh (Assisted Reading for Children in Oxfordshire) volunteers at Kidlington’s Baptist Church – and what a joyful, affirming occasion it was.
We were there to celebrate something remarkable: the quiet, consistent difference that ARCh volunteers make in the lives of children across the county. I was honoured not only to speak but also to hand out certificates recognising impressive milestones – 5 years, 10 years, and even one for 15 years of dedicated service.
Fifteen years! Just imagine the impact: hundreds of children supported, encouraged, and gently guided on their reading journey. Books shared, imaginations sparked, confidence steadily grown – all thanks to a volunteer who turned up, week after week, simply because they cared.
In my speech, I reflected on my own time as a primary school head and just how transformational it is when a child not only learns to read but learns to love reading. That’s exactly what ARCh achieves. It isn’t just about literacy levels (important though they are); it’s about opening new worlds, building self-belief, and giving children the time and attention they may not get elsewhere.
I was particularly delighted to pay tribute to the wonderful leadership of ARCh’s Joint CEOs, Jane and Elaine. Their warmth, clarity of purpose, and unshakeable belief in what children – and volunteers – are capable of is inspiring. Their stewardship ensures that ARCh continues to thrive and evolve, while staying rooted in its values.
The volunteers I met today were simply amazing. Kind, committed, unassuming people who spoke with such modesty about the huge role they play in a child’s development. Many began “just for a year or two” and have now stayed for a decade or more. As so often with volunteering, the gift goes both ways: so many shared how much they get from their weekly visits – laughter, perspective, and a deep sense of purpose.
If you’ve never come across ARCh before, I really encourage you to visit their website: www.archoxfordshire.org.uk. The stories are powerful, and the invitation to get involved is open to everyone who wants to make a difference – one book, one child, one hour at a time.
To everyone who was there today – thank you. For the certificates and conversation, the tea and cake (and yes, the storm-defying optimism!) – but most of all, thank you for being the very best of Oxfordshire.
