The High Sheriff of Oxfordshire

Championing justice and community across Oxfordshire

What is a High Sheriff?

The High Sheriff is a ceremonial officer chosen each year in every county of England and Wales, serving as the Queen or King's representative for law and order. Although the role is mostly symbolic, the High Sheriff supports judges, the police, and emergency services, and helps local community projects. They attend public events, promote local charities, and encourage community spirit. The position is unpaid, and the High Sheriff covers all the costs themselves, showing their dedication to public service and their community.

The High Sheriff serves for a single year, from April to the following April. They are selected through a nomination process, where candidates are chosen based on their contributions to the community and their ability to fulfill the role. The final appointment is made by the Sovereign, who ceremonially pricks the name of the chosen candidate with a silver bodkin on a parchment list during a special meeting of the Privy Council.

An Historic Role
Preserving Tradition and Remaining Relevant

The role of High Sheriff helps keep traditions alive by connecting the community to the old customs and ceremonies that have shaped law and order in the UK. This link to the past is honoured when High Sheriffs take part in events like the opening of the legal year, where they wear traditional outfits and follow historic practices. At the same time, the role stays relevant in the 21st century by addressing modern issues. High Sheriffs work with local police, emergency services, and community groups to tackle challenges like crime prevention, social justice, and building strong communities. By supporting local charities, encouraging volunteering, and recognising people who make a difference, the High Sheriff ensures this historic role continues to be important and meaningful today.

Making a Difference

Each High Sheriff brings their unique interests and passions to the role, making their year of service truly their own. Recent High Sheriffs of Oxfordshire have focused on a variety of causes, such as supporting youth programmes, promoting mental health awareness, and enhancing community safety. By choosing which local charities to support and which events to attend, they shape their term around the issues they care about most. This personal touch allows each High Sheriff to leave a lasting impact on their community, reflecting both their individual values and the needs of the county.
