The Duchess of Edinburgh at RAW

A Morning of Inspiration

This morning brought one of those quietly special moments that remind me just how extraordinary our county can be.

I had the pleasure of joining fellow civic leaders at RAW – a remarkable Oxfordshire social enterprise that uses creativity, upcycling and purposeful work to support people facing significant barriers in their lives. The Duchess of Edinburgh, Sophie, was visiting to meet the team, hear their stories and see their work first-hand.

As High Sheriff, I was in the line of civic introductions. It was lovely to greet Her Royal Highness again and exchange a few words. In my former role as Secretary General of The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, I had the privilege of accompanying HRH on several visits around the world, and it is always a joy to see her warm, genuine interest in people’s lives.

What particularly struck me today was the enthusiasm at RAW for introducing the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award to some of the young people they support. RAW already does extraordinary work nurturing confidence, skills and aspiration. Bringing the Award into that environment feels like the most natural next step – a chance for their young beneficiaries to set goals, challenge themselves and be recognised for what they achieve.

I look forward to following up with the RAW team in due course. There is enormous potential here, and it was heartening to see HRH’s encouragement land so warmly with the staff and participants.

A memorable morning, and a reminder of the power of creativity, compassion and opportunity working hand in hand. As ever, Oxfordshire continues to inspire.
