Oxford Kenya Fest 2025

A Joyful Afternoon at Horspath

Yesterday I had the great pleasure of joining Oxford Kenya Fest at Horspath Recreation Ground – and what an afternoon it was. Colour, music, food, laughter, and the unmistakable warmth of the Kenyan community filling the space.

I was joined by my High Sheriff’s Cadet, Isabella, along with her mum, Shaun, and Mark – and together we enjoyed a festival that truly brought Oxfordshire and Kenya together in celebration.

My thanks go above all to David Kimunya and his remarkable team for organising such a joyful event. It takes vision and dedication to make something like this happen, and the result was a gathering that lifted spirits and reminded us of the strength of community.

For me, it also stirred many memories. Kenya holds a special place in my heart. I spent time at Rowallan Scout Camp in Nairobi, much time in Thika, and visited Nyeri often – not just to see the place where Baden-Powell is buried, but to spend time with Duke of Edinburgh’s Award participants at Nyeri Secondary School, learning from its brilliant teachers and pupils. Over the past decade and more I have spent a great deal of time in Kenya, as Nairobi was home to the regional office of The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award. And like so many at yesterday’s event, my dear friend and colleague, Regional Director Edwin Kimani, is of Kikuyu origin. Those experiences have shaped me deeply – not only because of the country’s beauty, but because of the generosity and resilience of the people I have met and call friends.

It’s wonderful to see that same spirit alive and well here in Oxfordshire. The Kenyan diaspora contributes so much to the life of our county – in our schools, our businesses, our faith communities, and our culture. Oxford Kenya Fest was a celebration of those ties, and of the bridges that connect our county with Kenya.

And, of course, no Kenyan celebration would be complete without food. We ended our afternoon with excellent nyama choma, chicken, and ugali – a perfect reminder that fellowship and friendship are often best shared around a table.

Asante sana to everyone who made us so welcome.
