Marking the Day’s End with Honour

RAF Benson’s Sundown Ceremony

Yesterday evening, I had the privilege of attending the Sundown Ceremony at RAF Benson—a moving and dignified event steeped in tradition, carried out with all the hallmark precision and pride one expects from the Royal Air Force.

As the sun began its slow descent over the Oxfordshire countryside, every detail was in place. The ceremonial lowering of the RAF Ensign was conducted with solemnity and grace, the flag party moving in perfect step, their discipline a quiet but powerful tribute to service and sacrifice.

Adding a dramatic touch to the proceedings, a flypast of two helicopters soared overhead—a stirring moment that brought many heads skyward. I’ll let the aircraft enthusiasts among you identify the models from the photos (I’m sure you’ll be quicker than me!).

While most of the music during the ceremony itself was pre-recorded—carefully selected and respectfully timed—a small live orchestra entertained us afterwards during drinks and canapés. Their playing brought a cheerful close to an evening that balanced reflection and celebration beautifully.

I’m getting better at saying no to canapés (though it takes some resolve—Sherifing is not kind to the waistline!) and I’m proud to report I stuck with an elderflower pressé rather than a glass of prosecco. Small wins, but they add up.

My thanks to everyone at RAF Benson for their warm welcome and flawless hosting. Traditions like the Sundown Ceremony remind us not just of the past we honour, but of the values we still carry into each new day.
