Marking a New Chapter for The Leys College

It was a real delight earlier this evening to pull back the curtain on a brand-new commemorative plaque at The Leys College – a moment that marks not just a change of name, but a renewed sense of purpose for this important place of learning in the heart of the Oxfordshire community.

Until recently, the campus operated simply as a satellite of City of Oxford College, known as the Technology Campus. But over the past year it has been quietly transforming – becoming more rooted in its community, more ambitious in its offer, and more intentional about creating opportunities for the young people it serves.

Back in June, as part of my Hearing the Young Unheard work, we hosted a Breakfast Conversation right here on campus. Leaders from across the community joined young people to reflect on what helps young people flourish, and what still holds them back. At the end of that discussion, I invited everyone to make one practical commitment.

Gary Headland, CEO of Activate Learning, pledged to re-examine how this campus could better serve The Leys and its neighbouring communities.

Tonight, we saw the result of that pledge.

Activate Learning has since invested in new wellbeing facilities, strengthened community outreach, and – most importantly – appointed a dedicated Group Director to shape the future of the campus and expand the range of education offered here. This is a significant commitment, and one that will open up new pathways for young people across the area.

The evening also gave us a chance to thank Andy Slater for his leadership of the campus and to welcome Hannah Thomas into her new role as Group Director. Their work will ensure The Leys College continues to grow as a welcoming, inclusive and aspirational environment for learners.

So unveiling the plaque felt like much more than a ceremonial moment. It marked the beginning of a new chapter – a recognition that The Leys College now stands proudly as a campus in its own right, an anchor institution dedicated to serving its community.

A wonderful evening, and I am truly chuffed to see the energy and ambition that will carry this college forward.
