Honouring Our Armed Forces – Flag Raising in Oxford

This morning, beneath the soaring flagpoles in the shadow of Oxford Castle’s ancient stone walls, we gathered to mark the beginning of Armed Forces Week in Oxfordshire. With the County Council building just steps away, the ceremony felt deeply rooted in our civic and historical heart — a fitting place to reflect on service, sacrifice, and the strength of community.

On the dais with me were the Chair of Oxfordshire County Council, Cllr Mark Lygo; His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant, Marjorie Glasgow; and Lt Col Ged Hennigan, Commander of Bicester Garrison. We were joined by representatives from the Army, Royal Navy, and Royal Air Force, all standing together as the Armed Forces flag was raised in solemn tribute.

I was particularly struck by the quiet dignity of the moment — no grand speeches, just the powerful symbolism of the flag rising against the sky, reminding us of the dedication of those who serve, and those who have served, on our behalf.

And today, there was something extra to celebrate. Following the ceremony, we officially opened the newly designated HMS Diamond Room in County Hall — a symbol of the new affiliation between Oxfordshire and one of the Royal Navy’s most advanced warships. The connection between county and ship is a proud one, and today’s unveiling marks the beginning of what I hope will be a strong and lasting bond.

Events like these matter. They are small acts of remembrance, respect and gratitude — but they speak volumes. They tell our Armed Forces community that we see them, we thank them, and we stand with them.

As Armed Forces Week unfolds, I hope people across Oxfordshire will take a moment to reflect on those who serve — regular and reserve forces, veterans, cadets and their families — and perhaps even say thank you. I certainly will.
