Honouring Dedication Behind the Walls: The Oxfordshire Prison Service Awards 2025
3/3/20251 min read

On 3rd March 2025, County Hall in Oxford opened its doors for a very special event: the Oxfordshire Prison Service Awards. The evening brought together people from every corner of the prison system—officers, chaplains, educators, volunteers, support staff and more—all united by a shared commitment to rehabilitation, dignity, and hope.
With recipients from both of the county’s prisons—HMP Bullingdon and HMP Huntercombe—the awards shone a light on the tireless, often unseen work that transforms lives behind the prison walls.
The certificates were presented by the High Sheriff of Oxfordshire, James Macnamara, who warmly praised the courage, skill, and humanity of the awardees. In a moment that encapsulated the evening’s spirit, the High Sheriff was presented with a handmade hat crafted by men at Huntercombe—an emblem of creativity, collaboration, and second chances.
From prison officers who go above and beyond to maintain safety and foster respect, to chaplains offering solace and spiritual guidance, to the teachers opening doors to new opportunities through education, the evening was a powerful reminder of the many hands and hearts that shape the prison experience for the better.
Some recipients were celebrated for innovations in resettlement support, helping those nearing release to find housing and employment. Others were commended for their compassionate work with vulnerable prisoners, or for championing wellbeing across their teams. Volunteers and community partners were also honoured, reflecting the vital links between our prisons and the wider society.
These awards remind us that the prison service is not simply about containment—it is about change, responsibility, and hope. It is about real people doing difficult, essential work in an environment that demands resilience, professionalism, and profound humanity.
To all those recognised—and to the many others across HMP Bullingdon and HMP Huntercombe who serve day in, day out—we offer our thanks. Your work matters. Your impact is real. And your efforts help build a safer, more compassionate Oxfordshire for us all.
