Community, Courage, Coffee and Cake: Standing with the Hessian Family

This morning, I had the privilege of attending a fundraising coffee morning at Weston on the Green Village Hall. The hall was packed with people from the village and far beyond, all showing their support for Bob and Paula Hessian following the devastating fire that destroyed their family home just a week ago.

It was deeply heartening to see such a strong show of solidarity. The warmth and generosity on display reminded me—once again—of the extraordinary strength of Oxfordshire’s communities when faced with adversity.

Bob, who remains characteristically positive in spirit, told me how grateful they both are for the outpouring of kindness they’ve received. If you are in a position to support our neighbours with a donation, I know it would mean a great deal to the family.

A week ago today, Bob and Paula’s lives changed forever. Their 17th-century thatched cottage in the village was engulfed in flames, a blaze that brought down the roof, first floor, and much of the external structure. It was weeks away from being re-roofed—tragically, the fire began in the thatch. Though they were able to escape unharmed, they have lost everything.

Between 30 and 35 firefighters responded with great courage and professionalism, working tirelessly through the night of Saturday 5 April and well into Sunday. Thanks to their extraordinary efforts, the fire was eventually brought under control. There were no injuries, and no need for rescue—a testament to the rapid response and skill of our fire and rescue service.

The support from the local community since then has been remarkable. From messages of comfort and offers of help, to financial donations and practical support, it has been a true example of neighbourliness in action.

If you would like to contribute, the family has set up a fundraising page here:

They would also welcome offers of support from anyone with contacts in the building trade who might be able to assist with the long journey of rebuilding that lies ahead.
