Choosing Just Twenty

Celebrating the Best of Our County

Today was one of those days that reminds me why this role is such a privilege.

I spent much of the day with the judging team working our way through an extraordinary number of nominations for this year’s High Sheriff’s Awards. It was, in truth, a difficult task – not because of any shortage of worthy candidates, but precisely the opposite.

The range and quality of the nominations were remarkable. They came from every corner of Oxfordshire and reflected people of all ages, backgrounds and walks of life. Some were young people finding their voice and making a difference for others; others were individuals who have given decades of quiet, steadfast service to their communities. There were stories of compassion, courage, leadership, persistence and kindness – often offered without fanfare, recognition or expectation of thanks.

Reading them was both uplifting and humbling. Again and again, we found ourselves struck by just how much good is carried out, day in and day out, by people who would never describe themselves as exceptional – even though, plainly, they are.

Choosing just 20 awardees from such a field was not easy. It involved careful discussion, weighing evidence, and a shared determination to be fair and thoughtful. I am deeply grateful to the judging team for the care, integrity and seriousness they brought to the process.

This afternoon, I’ve written to those who will receive an award. I hope they are as delighted by the news as I was in reading about them and their contribution. The awards will be presented in March, and I very much look forward to celebrating them properly then.

But today also belongs to everyone who was nominated. Each nomination tells a story of a county that looks out for one another – a place rich in generosity, commitment and quiet acts of service. Oxfordshire is better because of these people, and it has been an honour to spend time in their company, even if only through the words of others.

As ever, I leave days like this truly chuffed – and profoundly grateful.
