Celebrating the Spirit of Scouting in Oxfordshire

Today I thoroughly enjoyed attending the annual Oxfordshire Scouts Awards Day at Youlbury Scout Camp, a celebration of commitment, achievement and community spirit. This remarkable event gathers young people from every Scout District across the county – and this year was no exception. With over 1,000 young people present, it was truly inspiring to witness such a powerful showcase of everything Scouting stands for.
Each of these young people received a certificate and a commemorative woggle, awarded in recognition of achieving the top award in their Section – a milestone that speaks to perseverance, teamwork, and the drive to make a difference.
None of this would be possible without the exceptional commitment of the adult volunteers who work so tirelessly, week in and week out, to support young people in their Scouting adventures. Their dedication, patience, and encouragement create the safe and inspiring spaces in which children and teenagers learn new skills, grow in confidence, and discover the joy of serving others. We owe them our heartfelt thanks.
Among the many highlights of the day, one story stood out. Cub Scout, Albert “Albie” Henderson received The Commendation Award, recognising his extraordinary bravery and dedication in raising awareness of Paediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS). Albie’s brother became disabled following a strep infection, and in response, Albie committed himself to advocacy. Through letters to HM The King, The Prime Minister, and others, including my friend, Wendy Chamberlain MP, who is the chair of the Paediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders (PANS PANDAS) All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG)– and through taking part in video resources now used by paediatric doctors – he has helped shine a light on a condition often overlooked.
I had the opportunity to see some of the wonderfully supportive replies he has received and was especially pleased to learn that Albie has also been awarded the Silver Blue Peter Badge for his efforts. He is a shining example of the courage, compassion and determination that lie at the heart of Scouting.
This is the tenth year that Oxfordshire Scouts have organised this event - and the driving force behind it each year has been Sarah Joyner, District Lead Volunteer for West Oxfordshire. It was wonderful to see her and so many Scouting friends today. Many thanks to County Lead Volunteer, Wendy Tatham and County Administrator, Michelle Turnell, for inviting me.
Congratulations to every Scout who received their award today. Your efforts are shaping the future – not just of Scouting, but of our communities and our country.
