Bridging the Channel – Young Voices in Witney

This afternoon, I had the great pleasure of visiting Witney Youth Council as they welcomed their opposite numbers from Le Touquet, over in northern France, for the start of a four-day exchange. It was a joyful, energetic gathering – full of laughter, thoughtful conversation, and moments of genuine connection between young people from both sides of the Channel.
The French delegation looked particularly smart in their tricolour civic sashes, giving a wonderful touch of ceremony and pride to the occasion. I was also pleased to see familiar faces from Witney Town Council, including Andy, the Mayor, who described the fish and chip supper (served generously and with vinegar!) as a "British delicacy." Judging by the empty cartons, it went down very well indeed and served as a perfect icebreaker.
I had the opportunity to say a few words – in French – about my role and my theme for the year. I explained that the office of High Sheriff of Oxfordshire is more than a thousand years old, dating back to before 1066. Once the King's chief representative in the county, the role is now ceremonial and voluntary, supporting judges, police, emergency services, and – most importantly – the people and organisations who build safer, stronger communities.
I shared with the group that my theme for the year is:
« Écouter les jeunes qu’on n’entend pas » – Hearing the Young Unheard.
Too often, young people who are struggling, or who feel overlooked, are denied the chance to speak. My goal is to help ensure that their voices are not only heard, but respected – and that those in positions of influence take them seriously.
Conversation flowed – sometimes in English, sometimes in French, and often somewhere in between. It was heartening to see how confidently some of the young people spoke both languages, and how determined everyone was to connect, despite the odd linguistic hiccup. Smiles, patience, and good humour carried the day.
I’m very much looking forward to returning in the autumn to join the Youth Council again – this time for a breakfast discussion focused on my Shrieval theme, and how young people in Oxfordshire might help shape the future of their communities.
Merci à tous – et à bientôt.
