Belonging in the Sunshine – Art in the Park, Milton Keynes

On what turned out to be the hottest day of the year – with just a few tiny spots of rain to keep us on our toes – I crossed the county boundary into Buckinghamshire to spend the afternoon at Art in the Park, the vibrant celebration of Islamic arts, heritage and culture held in Milton Keynes. My host was the wonderful Pippa, High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire, who offered a warm and generous welcome.

The theme for this year’s festival was Belonging – and it ran through every moment of the event. From the brilliant carnival parade and joyful music to the shared laughter over food and drink, there was a real sense of people coming together and celebrating what connects us.

Pippa spoke beautifully on stage about the importance of inclusion, and the richness that comes from embracing diversity in all its forms. I was especially moved by Milton Keynes’ Youth Mayor, who spoke about being “raised by a village of multicultural people.” It was such a simple and profound reminder of the power of community – and the difference it makes when every child feels they belong.

It was also fascinating to hear how Milton Keynes has become a place of welcome for so many refugees from around the world. As Art in the Park coincided with the end of Refugee Week, it felt especially fitting to be part of a festival that celebrates identity, culture, and connection in such an open-hearted way.

There was so much to enjoy – great bands, stunning costumes, and some truly smashing food (I’m still thinking about the falafel). Campbell Park was alive with colour and conversation, and there was a sense of welcome and pride that you could feel everywhere you turned.

Huge thanks to everyone involved in creating such a joyous, generous, and thought-provoking afternoon. I came away full of admiration – and with a bit of a sunburn to prove it.
