A Mid-Year Gathering with Fellow High Sheriffs

I was delighted to join colleagues at Monkey Island today for our mid-year gathering – always a highlight of the Shrieval calendar. Although I had to slip away after the first course to reach an afternoon engagement, the time I spent with the group was enormously worthwhile.
Pippa and Sean offered thoughtful and energising mid-year reflections on their own shrieval journeys. Hearing the themes, challenges, and moments that have shaped their first six months reminded me once again of the strength and generosity that underpin the shrieval community. Their honesty and good humour set exactly the right tone for the meeting.
We also heard helpful updates from the High Sheriffs’ Association, whose steady support and collective experience make such a difference as each of us navigates our own year. Jo, Chair of the Berkshire Bench, then gave a fascinating insight into the history of the magistracy – a reminder of how deeply rooted this role is in our shared civic life, and how much continuity and quiet service sit behind the work of local justice.
Finally, Chief Constable Jason provided a clear and candid update on the current challenges facing Thames Valley Police. His briefing underlined both the scale of the demands on policing and the deep commitment of officers and staff across the region. It was particularly valuable to hear his reflections on emerging pressures and the resilience required to meet them.
My thanks to Sean for bringing us together, and to everyone present for the warmth, wisdom, and sense of purpose you bring to this collective endeavour. It is always a privilege to spend time with people so devoted to strengthening their communities.
