A Day At Windsor Castle

Not strictly a Shrieval engagement—but today was certainly a personal milestone worth sharing. I was deeply honoured to be invested as a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales during a ceremony at Windsor Castle.
For those unfamiliar with it, the Royal Victorian Order is a dynastic order of knighthood established by Queen Victoria in 1896. Unlike many honours, it is given at the discretion of the Sovereign to recognise distinguished personal service to the monarchy. To be appointed a Commander (CVO) is a truly humbling recognition—and one that I shall treasure.
I was thrilled to be accompanied on this special day by my husband, Mark, my sister-in-law Trish, and my nephew Roary. We enjoyed exploring some of the many remarkable rooms and exhibits within the Castle—each a reminder of the history and heritage that make Windsor so unique.
The Prince of Wales was, as ever, warm and gracious. During our conversation, I mentioned that I owed him a massive apology. I told him of a moment from years ago when I was helping to organise a conference at Highgrove. In the midst of setting up, I managed to knock over a jug of water. Turning to the nearest person—a teenager in jeans and a sweatshirt—I asked if he knew where a mop was. He nodded, disappeared, returned, and, before I could grab the mop, proceeded to clear up the spill without fuss. That young man, of course, was Prince William, though in my fluster I didn't recognise him until a little too late. And I've been embarrassed ever since about asking the future King to clear up after me!
When I recounted the story today, he laughed and said, “That doesn’t sound like me at all as a teenager!” I, for one, suspect the opposite is true.
It was a day filled with joy, reflection, and a deep sense of gratitude—for those who have supported me, for the opportunities I’ve had to serve, and for the kindness of those who continue to make such moments memorable.
